Atalanta overcome wretched UCL start to clinch historic last-16 spot

Atalanta, incredibly, secured their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Making their tournament debut this season, the Italians got off to a horrid start, losing their opening three matches by a combined score of 11-2. But despite only collecting one point from their first four games, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men steadied the ship, beating Dinamo Zagreb and Shakhtar on the last two matchdays to advance to the round of 16.

Atalanta finished second in Group C behind runaway leaders Manchester City, whose concurrent win over Zagreb was equally vital in ensuring that the Serie A side’s European adventure will continue into 2020.

More to come.
