Atletico Madrid’s returning star Diego Costa is no stranger to a booking or two, having accrued many a yellow card in his club and international playing career. His latest yellow against Athletic Bilbao seemed particularly irksome, however, with Costa declaring the referees are “obsessed” with him.

The former Chelsea man picked up the card from referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez for questioning an offside call against Bilbao.

It’s his third yellow of the season, with the first two coming in his La Liga return against Getafe and resulting in a red card. In that match, Costa’s second yellow was given for celebrating in the stands with his reunited fans.

Having earned yet another yellow card for a non-foul incident, the Spain striker spoke out against the referees.

“Some people are obsessed with me. That can’t be changed,” he told beIN Sports after the match, as quoted by ESPN FC. “I get booked for the smallest thing. Today he wanted to show me a card, and that is how it went.”

Costa scored an 80th-minute goal to give his team a 2-0 win, which helped forgive the booking entirely. Still, it accounts for his 73rd career yellow, 27 more than his strike partner Antoine Griezmann.

Strangely enough, however, he has only seen red on three occasions.
