Hazard admits 1st season at Real Madrid was 'bad'

It was a debut season to forget for Eden Hazard following his lucrative transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid last summer.

The Belgian superstar admits that his first campaign in the Spanish capital was “bad” after he scored just one goal in nine league starts.

But Hazard, who is recovering from a broken fibula, insists that his form will improve when he returns to action next season.

“My first season at Real has been bad,” Hazard told Belgian national broadcaster RTBF, as translated by ESPN FC’s Alex Kirkland.

“But you don’t throw everything away. It was a season of adaptation. I will be judged on my second season. It is up to me to be in good shape next year.”

Hazard, who was sold to Los Blancos for €100 million, is currently back in Madrid in self-isolation following a trip to Dallas in early March to undergo surgery.

He said that he’s continuing to rehab his surgically repaired leg despite the uncertainty over when football will resume due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m waiting,” Hazard said. “I spoke to (Real Madrid manager Zinedine) Zidane on the phone, he doesn’t know either. All we can do is keep fit. Will La Liga restart? We don’t know. If we don’t, everyone will be disappointed, but that’s how it is.”

He added: “It’s better. We removed the stitches a week ago. I’m working a little more. I can walk now, so it’s going well.”

It was announced earlier this week that La Liga matches have been suspended indefinitely and the season won’t resume without the approval of the Spanish government.
