Ribery receives 3-match ban for pushing assistant referee

Franck Ribery has been suspended three matches and fined €20,000 for his actions toward an assistant referee in the aftermath of Fiorentina’s loss to Lazio, Serie A announced Monday.

The Frenchman was involved in a melee at the end of Sunday’s encounter, forcefully pushing match official Matteo Passeri while he and his Fiorentina teammates argued a decision not to award a foul in the buildup to Lazio’s winning goal.

Ribery, who’d been substituted in the 74th minute of the contest, was shown a red card for the incident. The ban means the 36-year-old will not be available for Fiorentina’s matches against Sassuolo, Parma, and Cagliari.

Serie A’s disciplinary panel announced the punishment shortly after Ribery issued an apology for his conduct.

“I am sorry about last night, I apologize (to) my teammates, the coach, and the fans. I apologize (to) Mr. Passeri, because after the final whistle I was very nervous and disappointed, and I hope he can understand my mood, ” Ribery said.

“I always want to be on the pitch, as I am here in Florence for this city and team, and I expect more care for Fiorentina, the same care that is given to other clubs, because of the hard work we put in on a daily basis.”

Ribery joined Fiorentina last summer following an illustrious 12-year career at Bayern Munich. He has two goals and two assists in nine Serie A appearances.
