Villarreal take advantage with victory over beleaguered Arsenal

Arsenal narrowly avoided disaster in Thursday’s Europa League semifinal first leg loss to Villarreal, as Mikel Arteta’s men scored an important away goal on a night in which his predecessor, Unai Emery, celebrated a 2-1 victory.

After conceding twice inside the opening 30 minutes, Arsenal’s hopes of producing a comeback after the break were left in tatters when Dani Ceballos was sent off for a second yellow card in the 57th minute.

Despite the disadvantage, Arsenal scored a late penalty to give themselves an opportunity bounce back in the return leg at the Emirates Stadium on May 6.

More to come.
